Venezia, My Love

Saturday 22 June 2019

Venezia was the first leg of our little pit stop trip in Italy. I would say out of all the places that we had arranged to see, Venice was one of the only places that I didn't have as many expectations, suggestions or opinions for. This can be seen as a good thing though. You can never be disappointed if you have low expectations.

That being said, I was COMPLETELY blown away. There is nothing that compares to Venice. It is one of its own. A completely different experience to many other places that I have been lucky enough to visit. Nothing quite prepares you for a little island, full of unique alley ways, walk ways, paths, canals, bridges and some of the most spectacular architecture. Although full of tourists, there isn't a view point, or part of the city that doesn't look attractive or breath taking. It's so unique, in such a compelling way. I fell in love within the 28 hours we were there.

Recommendations for those visiting..

T Fondaco Dei Tedeschi - Book a time slot for a free 15 minutes on top of the shopping mall, with the most incredible 360 degree view of Venice. It's the most incredible sight to see from above. This is a must in my opinion. I love a good view, and this one doesn't disappoint.

Rialto Bridge - Being one of the more famous bridges in Venice itself, it's a must see. It's been beautifully built and has an amazing view of the main grand canal.

Saint Mark's Basilica - Located in Saint Mark's square, the inside of this basilica was incredible. It was free to go in, although there was a charge of 2 euros to buy a shawl that covered my shoulders, in order to respect the holy place. It was beautiful! So much attention to details within the architecture and features inside and out. One thing to note, is that the cue is ALWAYS long. If it isn't encompassing the whole of Saint Mark's square, go then!!

Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute - Another free basilica. A note to add is that I wasn't allowed in due to wearing a dress. If your knees and shoulders are covered, you're able to go inside. I'm sure it was just as incredible inside as it was outside. Definitely a good spot to sit on the steps and watch the world go by.

Leonardo Di Vinci museum - If you're into art, or you just fancy walking through a museum, this would be a good one to visit!

Food - There are restaurants everywhere in Venezia. It's so lovely to sit by the canal and enjoy something to eat. Note that most places will have a cover charge for you to sit at the table. But don't let this deter you. The closer you eat to Saint Mark's square, the more expensive it is going to be. If you travel further out, there are so many cute, and quiet authentic Italian restaurants which are a must in my opinion. And of course, eat all the gelato!

Have you been to Venice? What was your favourite bit?
