3 Things I Am Doing For Myself

Saturday 20 January 2018

Not going to lie, these last couple of weeks have been rough. I've been full of exam stress amongst other things. Other things that have seemed to occupy the majority of my time. This year hasn't really felt like a 'fresh start' in the way that everyone talks about when a new year starts. But exams are now finally over, and I can start doing all the things I enjoy doing without the guilt that I should be revising - yay! With the odd chance that any of you reading this are feeling this way, or are going through something similar, here are the things that I have been doing to get through the struggles and horrible anxiety flooded moments.

Put your phone down - Never have I noticed how much I sit and just scroll through social media, for no real reason. Not only is it truly a waste of time, but it also didn't help the head space I found myself in. It wasn't making me feel any better or positive, and prioritising things that take away the negative thoughts and feelings is a must. I must learn to stop endlessly scrolling and put that time into something more productive, and something that will make motivate me.

Take a deep breath - Focus on the now. How you're feeling now isn't necessarily going to be how you're feeling in a couple of weeks time. Now exams are over, it's such a breath of fresh air - there is no guilt that I should be revising when I'm doing other things, and that is the best. Listen to your body. If you want to sit in bed and watch Netflix, you sit in bed and watch all of the Netflix. Take yourself for some fresh air if you're feeling stressed. Make a cup of tea and cuddle up in a blanket if that's what you want to do. Don't feel bad for it. Taking a breather can be so important.

Make a small list of goals - Following on from the previous point, but something I always find useful is writing down small goals or things that I want to have achieved by the end of the week, or the end of the day even. It keeps me focused. The sense of achievement when things have been ticked off or crossed off is always a way to boost your self-esteem, and it's little steps that will get you back on track to feeling more yourself.

There are so many ways that you can look after yourself, all varying upon the situation and what you feel helps the most. I know the mere thought of trying to pick yourself up after something unexpected, horrible, or upsetting happening, may seem impossible. But if I can do it, so can you. I'm feeling much better. You will too.

What do you like to do for yourself?

  1. I think a lot of people should put their phone down for a moment. We're all caught up in social media and we don't realise how much stress it's causing us! Whenever I pop into town I try to not look at my phone too much - I want to be out in the fresh air and not be a "smombie" (smartphone+zombie, apparently it's a thing). I only look at it if I need to check my bank balance or check the time while I'm out, but I usually leave it in my bag. It's so refreshing to not think about all that for a few hours!

    1. Couldn’t agree with you more! It’s almost a rarity to be without a phone on your person ever - so having a break from looking at it must definitely do more good than bad!

  2. omg. sitting and scrolling through social media was a HUGE one for me this year - i've luckily now got into the habit of completely switching my phone off and leaving it in a drawer for most of the weekend and i can't tell you how much better i feel for it! and SO much more time for cake eating now haha!

  6. One of the things that I've been working on this year is trying to feel more balanced. I want to invest time in all my interests and decided that I need to prioritize reading again. It has been great.

  9. I totally understand how you're feeling! This year hasn't started off well for me and I've been feeling pretty rubbish tbh. But I've been taking some time out to myself and just staying off social media for a day or two at a time if needed. I've realised how draining social media can be at times. I also love writing little goals down. I do weekly ones and monthly ones and write them on my notes on my phone, there's nothing more satisfying than ticking things off x

    1. I hope you’re starting to feel a bit better... I know how it can feel when one thing starts to go bad, it’s like everything just falls down behind it! But it will definitely get better. Especially if doing things like social media breaks are doing you some good. You got this! Small victories like crossing off to do lists can be what it takes to feel accomplished x

  10. Social media is so toxic when you're not feeling your best! It can make you feel much worse and as you said it is truly a waste of time. I love your ideas though. Listening to our bodies are so important. They're usually telling us something for a reason, so it is best to slow down and act accordingly. Great post and hope you feel better soon without the exam stress xx

    1. It's crazy how fast it can change your mindset. It's pretty scary tbh! We can't help comparing ourselves to others, and this is never healthy. Thank-you Lauren, means a lot xx

  11. I couldn't find a blog post that I relate to more right now - everything you have mentioned I just couldn't agree more! I feel like this year has been a bit of a rocky start but there's still 11 months left, so it can only get better. And the tips are very helpful - thank you! x
